Job Title: Heavy Equipment Operator Supervisor

Job Summary:

Artacia Contracting Ltd., a leading civil construction contractor based in Fort St. John, BC, is seeking an experienced Heavy Equipment Operator Supervisor to oversee and coordinate the work of a crew engaged in large-scale civil earthworks, grading, excavation, trenching, and site preparation projects. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and scheduling daily operations, allocating equipment and manpower resources, ensuring compliance with project specifications, and enforcing workplace safety standards. This role requires hands-on leadership, strong technical knowledge of heavy equipment operation, and the ability to troubleshoot and resolve mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues in the field to minimize downtime.

 

This position requires flexibility to work BOTH EVENINGS AND WEEKENDS, as many projects are scheduled during these periods under approved permits. Applicants must be willing and able to commit to working evenings and weekends as project needs require.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Supervise, coordinate, and schedule the activities of heavy equipment operators engaged in civil earthworks, grading, excavation, trenching, and site preparation for residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects. 

  • Plan and organize daily work assignments, equipment deployment, and manpower allocation to meet project deadlines and quality standards. 

  • Read and interpret project plans, blueprints, and grade specifications to ensure compliance with engineering and safety requirements. 

  • Train operators on safe and efficient use of equipment such as excavators, bulldozers, loaders, graders, compactors, and articulated trucks. 

  • Monitor equipment performance, identify operational issues, and provide guidance in troubleshooting common mechanical problems to minimize downtime. 

  • Conduct and oversee routine maintenance checks, fluid inspections, filter changes, and basic repairs on-site, and coordinate with mechanics for more complex service requirements. 

  • Inspect work in progress and completed work to verify accuracy of grades, slopes, and alignments. 

  • Enforce workplace safety policies, site-specific hazard controls, and compliance with provincial and federal occupational health and safety regulations. 

  • Liaise with project managers, site supervisors, subcontractors, and clients to coordinate work sequences, resolve operational issues, and maintain progress. 

  • Prepare activity reports, work records, and equipment usage logs as required.

  • Recommend measures to improve productivity, equipment performance, and crew safety. 

 

Wage/Salary: $42.00/hour

Hours Per Week: 40 hours per week

Terms of Employment: Full-Time, Permanent

Location of Work: Reporting to 12234 Pacific Avenue, Fort St. John, BC, V1J 8A5, will be dispatched to sites in and around the Fort St. John area.

Skills Requirements

Education: No Minimum Education Requirement

Work Experience: Must have at least 5 years of verifiable work experience in heavy equipment operation and civil works, including excavation, grading, trenching, and site preparation; Must have at least 2 years of verifiable experience in a supervisory or management role overseeing heavy equipment crews on civil construction or infrastructure projects.

Skills/Licensing:

  • Demonstrated and verifiable work history supervising and coordinating the activities of heavy equipment operators on civil construction projects.

  • Demonstrated ability to operate and oversee the safe use of heavy equipment such as excavators, bulldozers, graders, loaders, compactors, and articulated trucks.

  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret project plans, blueprints, grade specifications, and survey stakes.

  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve basic mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues with heavy equipment in the field.

  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License is required
