Personal support worker

We are seeking a caring, patient and reliable personal support worker to assist the employer’s 89-year-old female, who has dementia and requires assistance with mobility and daily personal care. She needs care and supervision around the clock. This position provides support during assigned shifts as part of her overall care arrangements.

Duties and responsibilities

• Provide companionship, reassurance and attentive supervision to an elderly person living with dementia; use calm communication, gentle reminders and consistent routines.
• Assist with walking, getting in and out of bed or chairs, transfers and repositioning, using safe techniques and mobility aids as required.
• Provide bedside and personal care, including bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting and assistance with incontinence care as needed.
• Help maintain a safe environment, reduce fall hazards and remain attentive to confusion, disorientation or unsafe movements.
• Provide medication reminders and assistance in accordance with the established care plan and instructions.
• Prepare and serve nutritious meals, follow dietary instructions and assist with eating and drinking as needed.
• Assist with gentle exercise and supervised walks as appropriate to her abilities.
• Observe and report changes in well-being, behaviour, mobility, appetite or sleep to the employer; keep care notes and communicate relevant information at shift handover.
• Provide care and respond to personal care and mobility needs during assigned shifts, including overnight shifts if scheduled.
• Launder clothing and linens, perform light housekeeping related to her care, and shop for groceries and household supplies.

Employment terms

Permanent, full-time: 40 hours per week. Shift times to be confirmed with the employer based on care arrangements; availability for morning, daytime, evening and overnight shifts may be required. Overtime may be offered as needed. The employee is not expected to provide continuous 24-hour care.
Wage: $22.00 per hour. Public transportation is available.
Work must be performed at the stated location; there is no remote work option. Relocation costs, if any, will be covered by the employer.

Requirements and how to apply

Secondary school graduation certificate. Previous caregiving experience is an asset. English is required. A criminal record check will be required. Candidates must be able to provide hands-on personal care and safely assist with mobility and transfers (for individual of 170 pounds), using appropriate assistance or equipment when needed.
