Hotel Assistant Manager

We are seeking one (1) Hotel Assistant Manager with 1 to 2 years of related experience to join our team at Quality Inn & Suites Bay Front in Sault Ste. Marie. The preferred candidate will report to the General Manager and bring a solid background in hospitality management, staff supervision, and guest service within a busy, full-service hotel environment. This position calls for strong leadership, clear communication, and sound problem-solving skills, together with the ability to keep day-to-day operations running smoothly and to resolve guest and operational matters with professionalism and attention to detail. Upon employment, the successful candidate will be expected to sign and acknowledge the technical, operational, and service training standards, as well as this job description.

Anticipated Start Date: As soon as possible

Terms of Employment: Permanent Full-time, 35 hours/week

Salary: $37.64/hour

Paid Vacation and Public Holidays: 2 weeks paid vacation

Vacation Pay: 4% of gross salary

Work Setting: On site — hotel, motel, resort (no option to work remotely)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and co-ordinate the work of hotel staff across the front desk, housekeeping, and maintenance functions (3–4 direct reports) to ensure smooth and efficient daily operations.
  • Establish work schedules and assign duties based on occupancy levels and operational needs, ensuring shifts are adequately covered and tasks are completed promptly.
  • Recruit, hire, and onboard new staff, and conduct training sessions on guest-service standards, safety procedures, and hotel policies.
  • Conduct staff performance reviews and address performance or conduct matters as they arise.
  • Enforce hotel policies and procedures and resolve day-to-day operational problems to maintain a consistent standard of service.
  • Address and resolve guest complaints and concerns, and assist guests with special needs with professionalism and discretion.
  • Negotiate with suppliers for the provision of materials and supplies, oversee requisitioning, and maintain adequate inventory levels.
  • Negotiate with clients for the use of hotel facilities and co-ordinate events and functions held at the property.
  • Arrange for and oversee the maintenance and repair of hotel equipment and systems to ensure business continuity and guest safety.
  • Implement marketing activities to promote the hotel and its services.
  • Prepare and submit daily operational reports to hotel management, flagging any operational or service concerns and recommending appropriate measures.
  • Perform the duties of supervised staff when required to maintain service levels during peak periods or absences.

Work Conditions:

  • Physical Demands: Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, standing for extended periods and managing multiple priorities at once.
  • Work Environment: A busy front-of-house hotel operation, occasionally under tight deadlines
  • Attention to Detail: Essential for maintaining a clean, safe, and well-run environment for guests and staff.

Qualifications:

  • Education: College diploma (College/CEGEP) in Hospitality Management, Business Administration, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience: Minimum 1 to 2 years in a supervisory or administrative role within a hotel or similar hospitality environment.
  • Technical Knowledge: Proficiency with MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, MS Office, and Google Drive; familiarity with hotel front-desk / property-management systems is an asset.
  • Language Requirements: English (fluent).
