Web Designer (NOC 21233)

Web designers design, develop and maintain websites and web applications, creating user-friendly and visually appealing digital experiences. They work with clients, project managers, developers and other professionals to determine website requirements, develop layouts and interfaces, and ensure websites function effectively across different devices and browsers. Web designers may specialize in user experience (UX), user interface (UI), responsive design, accessibility, front-end development or other areas of web design. They are employed by web development companies, information technology firms, advertising and marketing agencies, media companies and other organizations, or may be self-employed.

Web designers

  • Consult with clients and stakeholders to determine website objectives, requirements, content, functionality and design specifications

  • Plan, design and develop websites and web-based applications using appropriate design principles, technologies and development tools

  • Create website layouts, page structures, navigation systems, user interfaces and visual elements to provide an effective and engaging user experience

  • Develop wireframes, mock-ups, prototypes and design concepts to demonstrate website structure, functionality and appearance

  • Design and optimize websites for desktop, tablet and mobile devices using responsive and adaptive design techniques

  • Select and create appropriate colours, typography, graphics, images, icons and other visual elements consistent with branding and project requirements

  • Develop and maintain user interface designs that are accessible, intuitive, consistent and easy to navigate

  • Collaborate with web developers, programmers, content creators, graphic designers, marketing specialists and other team members to implement website designs

  • Use HTML, CSS, JavaScript and other relevant web technologies and design tools to create, modify and maintain web pages and interfaces

  • Test websites and web interfaces for functionality, usability, compatibility, responsiveness and performance across different browsers and devices

  • Identify and resolve design, layout, usability and compatibility issues and make improvements based on testing and user feedback

  • Optimize website designs for accessibility, search engine visibility, loading speed and overall user experience

  • Maintain, update and improve existing websites, including page layouts, content presentation, navigation and interactive features

  • Ensure website designs comply with organizational branding standards, accessibility requirements and applicable web design best practices

  • Work with clients and internal stakeholders to review designs, gather feedback and make revisions as required

  • May conduct user research, usability testing and analysis of user behaviour to improve website navigation and overall user experience

  • May prepare documentation, design guidelines, style guides and specifications for website development and maintenance

  • May coordinate and supervise the work of other web designers or design team members

  • May provide advice on website design, usability, accessibility, content presentation and digital user experience

  • May manage multiple web design projects, establish priorities and coordinate project schedules to meet deadlines

  • May research and evaluate emerging web design technologies, tools, trends and industry practices.
