North End Connectors, an Aecon-led consortium comprised of Aecon, FCC Construcción, and Ghella, is delivering the Yonge North Subway Extension Advance Tunnel project for Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx. YNSE Labour Co, the labour arm, is looking for a Supervisor/ Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) to join our team immediately in support of the Yonge North Subway Extension Advance Tunnel project.

 

In this role, the Supervisor/ Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) will be required to work from (1) the project office, located at 5650 Yonge Street, 18th floor, Toronto ON  M2M 4G3; (2) the site office, located at 17 Ruggles Avenue, Thornhill ON L3T 3S4; and (3) at various tunnel construction sites. The language of work for the position is English.

 

The Supervisor/ Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) role will be responsible for overseeing and coordinating mechanical activities for tunnel boring machine operations, ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable performance of underground equipment. Specifically, the main responsibilities of the position include:

 

  • Supervising, coordinating, and scheduling the activities of TBM Mechanics, helpers, and labour personnel performing maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of tunneling equipment, while assigning tasks, setting priorities, and monitoring work quality and productivity
  • Planning, organizing, and overseeing preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programs for TBM systems and associated underground equipment, including reviewing maintenance logs, inspection reports, and equipment performance data to ensure reliability and minimize downtime
  • Troubleshooting and resolving mechanical issues, providing hands-on support for complex or escalated equipment failures, and supporting the installation, commissioning, and optimization of systems such as ventilation and dewatering
  • Ensuring compliance with underground safety standards by enforcing procedures such as lockout/tagout, confined space entry, and equipment isolation, while conducting safety inspections, hazard assessments, and leading safety meetings and toolbox talks
  • Coordinating work activities with TBM operators, electricians, engineers, and project supervisors, communicating equipment status and maintenance updates, ordering required materials and parts, and preparing reports on maintenance activities, equipment performance, and operational progress
  • Establishing and following maintenance procedures in line with manufacturer recommendations and project specifications, ensuring consistency, efficiency, and adherence to quality standards
  • Participating in planning activities for equipment upgrades, modifications, and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance TBM performance and overall project productivity

 

You must have the following qualifications:

 

  • Extensive mechanical experience with with heavy equipment, tunneling equipment, mining machinery, or industrial systems
  • Experience in a TBM supervisory or lead mechanic role
  • Expertise with hydraulics, diesel systems, pneumatics, mechanical servicing, and underground construction equipment
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, hydraulic schematics, and OEM documentation
  • Ability to work in underground, confined, hot/cold, humid, and noisy conditions
  • Availability to work shifts, and rotations and weekends

 

This is a full-time unionized position of 40 hours/week for the duration of the project, which is expected to be completed in 2035. Weekly working hours may vary based on project needs. Overtime is available. The individiuals will receive a wage according to the Collective Agreement (Local 183’s Wage Article 4 – Tunnel Work, Group 4), which is $54.99/hour, plus vacation pay of $5.50/hr, plus $19.55/hr for contributions to benefits and funds, for a total wage package of $80.04/hour. Overtime pay will be provided as detailed in the collective agreement.
