North End Connectors, an Aecon-led consortium comprised of Aecon, FCC Construcción, and Ghella, is delivering the Yonge North Subway Extension Advance Tunnel project for Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx. YNSE Labour Co, the labour arm, is looking for a Mechanic Operator/  Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM)  to join our team immediately in support of the Yonge North Subway Extension Advance Tunnel project.

 

In this role, the Mechanic Operator/  Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM)  will be required to work from (1) the project office, located at 5650 Yonge Street, 18th floor, Toronto ON  M2M 4G3; (2) the site office, located at 17 Ruggles Avenue, Thornhill ON L3T 3S4; and (3) at various tunnel construction sites. The language of work for the position is English.

 

The Mechanic Operator/  Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) role will be responsible for the installation, inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of mechanical, hydraulic, ventilation, dewatering, and auxiliary systems used in underground tunneling operations. Specifically, the main responsibilities of the position include:

 

  • Performing preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance on underground mechanical and hydraulic systems, ensuring equipment is operating safely and efficiently
  • Inspecting and testing tunneling equipment to identify faults, malfunctions, and performance issues
  • Diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing complex systems, including pumps, hydraulics, drivelines, spraying systems, and excavation machinery
  • Adjusting, repairing, or replacing defective components using appropriate tools and techniques, and verifying repairs to ensure proper performance
  • Responding to equipment breakdowns and carrying out real-time troubleshooting to minimize operational delays
  • Maintaining accurate service logs, inspection records, and maintenance documentation
  • Adhering to all safety protocols, including lockout/tagout procedures and confined space requirements, and supporting a safe underground work environment
  • Conducting routine equipment inspections to ensure compliance with company, industry, and regulatory standards
  • Working closely with TBM operators, electricians, engineers, and supervisors to coordinate maintenance activities and repair priorities
  • Providing technical guidance and support to apprentices and junior mechanics as required
  • Communicating equipment status, issues, and maintenance updates clearly and proactively.

 

You must have the following qualifications:

 

  • Experience as a heavy equipment mechanic, industrial mechanic, or millwright (underground or tunneling experience preferred)
  • Strong knowledge of hydraulic systems, diesel engines and pneumatics, and  structural  systems
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings,  mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatics  manuals
  • Ability to work in underground, confined, hot/cold, humid, and noisy conditions;
  • Availability to work shifts, and rotations and weekends

 

This is a full-time unionized position of 40 hours/week for the duration of the project, which is expected to be completed in 2035. Weekly working hours may vary based on project needs. Overtime is available. The individiuals will receive a wage according to the Collective Agreement (Local 183’s Wage Article 4 – Tunnel Work, Group 4), which is $54.99/hour, plus vacation pay of $5.50/hr, plus $19.55/hr for contributions to benefits and funds, for a total wage package of $80.04/hour. Overtime pay will be provided as detailed in the collective agreement.
