North End Connectors, an Aecon-led consortium comprised of Aecon, FCC Construcción, and Ghella, is delivering the Yonge North Subway Extension Advance Tunnel project for Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx. YNSE Labour Co, the labour arm, is looking for two (2) Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) /Mechanical Surface Supervisors to join our team immediately in support of the Yonge North Subway Extension Advance Tunnel project.

 

In this role, the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) /Mechanical Surface Supervisor  will be required to work from (1) the project office, located at 5650 Yonge Street, 18th floor, Toronto ON  M2M 4G3; (2) the site office, located at 17 Ruggles Avenue, Thornhill ON L3T 3S4; and (3) at various tunnel construction sites. The language of work for the position is English.

 

The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) /Mechanical Surface Supervisor  role will be responsible for inspection, preventive and corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs of heavy civil and plant equipment located at the surface works—including shaft headgear, surface conveyors, mucking systems, hydraulic power units, pumps, air systems, mobile equipment, and electrical/mechanical auxiliaries. The role requires strong diagnostics across hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, and basic electrical systems, safe work planning, and thorough documentation in the CMMS (computerized maintenance management system). Specifically, the main responsibilities of the position include:

 

  • Supervising, coordinating, and supporting surface mechanics in daily maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair activities and assigning tasks and setting priorities to meet operational schedules
  • Planning, organizing, and coordinating maintenance activities to ensure equipment, materials, and labour are available to support continuous and efficient operations
  • Monitoring work progress, equipment performance, and crew productivity, addressing issues and implementing solutions to minimize downtime and improve overall efficiency
  • Providing technical guidance on complex mechanical issues and collaborate with engineers, OEM representatives, and other supervisors to resolve operational challenges
  • Coordinating maintenance programs, including preventative, predictive, and corrective work, ensuring activities are completed in accordance with project requirements and timelines
  • Requesting and managing materials, spare parts, and supplies required for maintenance and repair activities
  • Reviewing maintenance records, inspection reports, and equipment performance data, and maintain accurate documentation in the CMMS
  • Establishing safe work practices, conduct site inspections, and ensure compliance with safety procedures, regulations, and company standards
  • Training and mentoring team members, support skills development, and promote safe and productive work practices
  • Communicating equipment status, work progress, and operational issues to project managers and other supervisors, and preparing regular reports as required
  • Coordinating with TBM operations, logistics, and other site teams to ensure work activities are aligned and disruptions are minimized
  • Responding to breakdowns and operational issues, resolving problems and recommending improvements to enhance reliability and productivity

 

You must have the following qualifications:

 

  • Mechanical experience with heavy equipment, tunneling equipment, mining machinery, or industrial systems
  • Experience as a mechanical surface supervisor or lead mechanic role
  • Expertise with hydraulics, diesel systems, pneumatics, mechanical servicing, and underground construction equipment
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, hydraulic schematics, and OEM documentation
  • Ability to work in underground, confined, hot/cold, humid, and noisy conditions
  • Availability to work shifts, and rotations and weekends

 

This is a full-time unionized position of 40 hours/week for the duration of the project, which is expected to be completed in 2035. Weekly working hours may vary based on project needs. Overtime is available. The individiuals will receive a wage according to the Collective Agreement (Local 183’s Wage Article 4 – Tunnel Work, Group 4), which is $54.99/hour, plus vacation pay of $5.50/hr, plus $19.55/hr for contributions to benefits and funds, for a total wage package of $80.04/hour. Overtime pay will be provided as detailed in the collective agreement.
