Job Description: 

This position involves providing permanent full-time personal support to a 40-year-old male individual with significant physical disabilities in a private home setting in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. 

The individual requires intensive physical assistance due to advanced mobility limitations (Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy) and complex medical needs, including tracheostomy care.  

The role requires working 12-hour day and night rotations and availability for on-call responsibilities and irregular scheduling to ensure continuity of care. The successful candidate must demonstrate responsibility and theability to respond calmly in situations requiring immediate assistance. 

 

Job Duties: 

  • Provide personal care assistance including bathing, dressing, and grooming 

  • Assist with safe transfers, repositioning, and mobility support 

  • Operate and assist with patient lifting and transfer equipment 

  • Assist with feeding and meal preparation 

  • Assist with medication handling and administration as directed 

  • Provide support related to tracheostomy care  

  • Monitor health condition and report changes 

  • Perform light housekeeping related to client care 

  • Maintain a safe and clean home environment 

  • Provide respectful companionship and emotional support 

 

Employment Requirements: 

  • Secondary school diploma 

  • Minimum 1 year of previous caregiving experience 

  • Fluent English (spoken, written, reading and listening comprehension required) 

  • Experience providing care to individuals with significant physical disabilities 

  • Candidates must provide employment references confirming relevant caregiving experience 

  • Experience supporting individuals with tracheostomy needs is preferred 

  • Experience operating patient lifting and transfer equipment and be able to safely transfer patients 

  • Experience assisting with medication handling 

  • Ability to prioritize this position as primary employment 

  • Availability for 12-hour day and night shifts 

  • Availability for on-call responsibilities 

  • Ability to work irregular schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays 

  • Ability to work independently and responsibly 

  • First Aid and CPR certification is an asset 

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada 

  • Must be able to reliably commute to the work location in Antigonish, Nova Scotia 

  • Specific on-site training will be provided 

 

Wage and Benefits: 

  • $27.33 per hour 

  • Shift differential: Additional $2.35 per hour for applicable shifts 

  • Weekend premium: Additional $2.35 per hour for hours worked between 00:00 Friday and 08:00 Monday 

  • Holiday pay: 1.5 times regular rate per Provincial Statutory Holiday 

  • On-call pay: $81.99 per on-call shift 

  • Unscheduled overtime: 1.5 times regular rate 

  • Vacation pay: 4% added biweekly
